Cleveland State University, often referred to as simply CSU, is a public university in Cleveland, which is the county seat of Cuyahoga County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 478 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the state’s most populous county and the 33rd largest city in USA.
CSU’s history begins in 1870, when the Cleveland YMCA began to offer free classes, which was formalized in 1881 and re-organized in 1906, first starting as Association Institute, which later became Cleveland Y.M.C.A. School of Technology. In 1929, the institution became known as Fenn College, remaining named so until December 18, 1964, when the state of Ohio founded The Cleveland State University, the name being reduced to simply Cleveland State University, shortly after.
Since it first opened its doors to students, CSU has significant grew, offering today a total of 70 academic majors and 27 master’s degree programs, as well as 2 post-master’s degrees, including 6 doctoral and 2 law degrees, being classified as one of seven "Urban Research Universities", by The University System of Ohio and being also named a "Doctoral/Research University" by the Carnegie Foundation.
Its athletic teams are known as the Cleveland State Vikings, who compete in 17 sports in NCAA Division I, with most of the teams playing in the Horizon League. The Vikings have experienced victory in many of their sports, including in men’s basketball, in 1986, when they seeded 14th in the NCAA tournament, appearing again, in the NCAA, in 2009, upsetting the highly favored 4th seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Tim Russert - author, NBC Washington bureau chief, moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, Chris Ronayne - President of University Circle Inc., Frank G. Jackson - Mayor of the City of Cleveland, Carl B. Stokes - first African American mayor of a major U.S. city (Cleveland), and Bert Wolstein - real estate developer, owner of indoor soccer franchise and philanthropist, among others.
